Spray Foam Insulation

Here at Virginia Foam Insulators we use only the highest quality spray foam insulation to work on projects such as retrofitting, crawl spaces, attics, and new construction. Crawl Spaces

Within crawl spaces are one of the most problematic areas of the home in regards to having issues with moisture. They're within the foundations, and exposed to the dirt; if there's been rain recently it will be damp in your crawl space. Summer is even worse with its heat making it even muggier. This moisture is a breeding ground for mold and mildew in your home. Notwithstanding other issues such as pests and up to 30% of a home's energy loss.

Remove the existing insulation and apply a minimum 10 mil polyethylene vapor barrier (this is thick enough to allow you to walk around on it without puncturing the membrane) on the floor of the crawl space and glue the edges up the crawl space walls at least 6 inches above the outside grade.

We then close and seal all vents to the crawl space with rigid foam boards. If a combustion appliance such as a gas or oil furnace is present in the space, a dedicated air supply may be necessary.

Finally, we apply at least a 2 inch average of Closed-Cell Polyurethane Spray Foam to cover the seam of the vapor barrier as well as the crawl space walls and vents. A 2 inch average of Closed-Cell Polyurethane Spray Foam is also applied to the rim joist and band board as crawlspace insulation.

By using at least an average of 2 inches of closed-cell foam the homeowner gets an air and vapor barrier that eliminates the intrusion of cold and warm air through the crawl space walls while the polyethylene vapor barrier prevents the intrusion of naturally occurring moisture and pollutants that are present on the ground.

Remove the existing insulation and apply at least a 2 inch average of Closed-Cell Polyurethane Spray Foam to the crawl space ceiling. All ductwork and piping should be sprayed to prevent heat loss and to avoid freezing in the winter.

By using at least an average of 2 inches of Closed-Cell Polyurethane Foam the homeowner gets an air and vapor barrier that eliminates the intrusion of cold and warm air through the floor as well as the intrusion of naturally occurring moisture and pollutants, that are present on the ground and that get sucked up into the home because of the homes stack effect.

In many locations it is now code to have a minimum of 6-8 mil polyethylene vapor barrier installed on the floor of a vented crawl space so as to also help against the intrusion of moisture and pollutants from directly below the home.

Attics

There's little worse than having rodents such as mice in your attic. Attics often aren't insulated, or aren't insulated properly. When this happens, you're more likely to get pests living up there. Insulating your attic can help avoid this, as well as avoid the energy loss that comes from bad or nonexistent insulation.

Install Blown-In Fiberglass insulation over your existing insulation to bring your attic up to a minimum of at least an R-38. Keep in mind this is the minimum you should have. Unfortunately, most homes today do not have anywhere near this much insulation in the attic. Blown-In Fiberglass represents the cheapest option for the homeowner. While good, this product is limited in its effectiveness as it still allows air to flow through it helping to perpetuate the stack effect in most homes.

If no HVAC units or air ducts are located in the attic, Virginia Foam Insulators recommends the removal of the existing insulation and the spraying of a minimum of at least a 1" average of Closed-Cell Polyurethane Spray Foam onto the attic floor (also known as down spraying).

With this application all recessed lighting fixtures, fan exhausts, and other fixtures that pierce the ceiling are covered with hard spray foam or mineral wool boxes and then the attic floor is then sprayed with Closed-Cell Polyurethane Foam insulation. This application is then followed up by installing fiberglass insulation over the foam insulation to bring the attic to an R-38 code level or higher. This approach results in a significant improvement over just Blown-in Fiberglass because an air barrier is reached and it is less expensive than spraying 2 inches of foam.

First we cover can lights and other ceiling perforations with specially made covers. We then cover the ceiling with 1-2 inches of closed cell spray foam. Finally, a layer of blown fiberglass is placed over the spray foam to bring the attic to code.

If HVAC units or air ducts are in the attic space, we recommend the removal of the existing insulation and the installing of at least a 2.5 inch average depth of Closed-Cell Polyurethane Spray Foam or for a cheaper option the homeowner can have installed at least a 5 inch average depth of Open-Cell Polyurethane Spray Foam. These products are applied to the roof deck (or the underside of your roof) as well as over all soffits, ridge vents, fans, etc. resulting in the attic being sealed airtight. Consequently, this eliminates the stack effect in your home, addresses the 20-25% leakage that most homes have in their duct work connections and allows your air ducts and/or HVAC unit to operate in a conditioned space that will vary no more than 10-15 degrees from the internal temperature of your home.

Remember, if you have a gas/propane furnace in your attic it must have a fresh air intake and be vented to the outside. If you do not have this in place it will need to be done prior to installing the insulation by an HVAC company. A customer should expect to pay somewhere between $300-$500 for this service.

If no HVAC units or air ducts are present in the attic, Virginia Foam Insulators recommends the removal of the existing insulation and the installing of between 1 to 2 inches of Closed-Cell Polyurethane Spray Foam to the attic floor. With this application, since we are spraying the attic floor, all floor boards must be taken up to gain access to the attic floor. We then cover all recessed lighting fixtures, fan exhausts, and other fixtures that pierce the ceiling with hard spray foam or mineral wool boxes. The entire attic floor and boxes are then sprayed with Closed-Cell Polyurethane Spray Foam providing a monolithic air barrier. If a homeowner chooses to go with less than 2 inches of Closed-Cell Polyurethane Spray Foam, technically no additional insulation is required, but we do recommend that homeowners overlay the spray foam with additional blown-in fiberglass to pass a home inspection in the event the home is ever to be sold.

Residential Retrofit Services

Inadequate insulation and air leakage are the primary causes of energy waste in most homes costing American families $100s of millions every year in higher energy bills. If your home was built before 1970 chances are you have little or no wall insulation installed. Even homes built in the last 10 years can suffer from significant air leakage as state and local requirements for insulation do not address the amount of air leakage a house has but rather just the R-value of the insulation required in the walls and attics.

At Virginia Foam Insulators we can insulate your existing home's walls using the latest approaches and insulation materials to save you money as well as make your house feel more comfortable. At Virginia Foam Insulators our goal is to make your home feel warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. We accomplish this by not focusing on the R-value (learn about the R-Value myth) of your insulation, but rather by promoting and installing products that stop unwanted airflow into and out of your home.

To get the simplest impact of insulation, customers are encouraged to install Blown-In Fiberglass. This product is cheaper than spray foam insulation but will also provide some energy savings. Homeowners will notice a significant improvement in their climate control when insulation is installed. While this less expensive measure will show homeowners the benefits of insulation, the product does not create a seal at the edges and, as insulation compresses over time, gaps can form at the top of the wall cavity.
Install Open-Cell Spray Polyurethane Foam into the wall cavity. As this foam rapidly expands within your walls, it covers and closes all cracks to create an air-tight seal. As the foam expands to fill all gaps and dries in place, you can be sure it will not compress, melt or fall away, giving you a more comfortable home for years to come.
 

New Construction

When building your new home, Virginia Foam Insulators can provide tailored insulation to insure that your home stays cool in the summer and warm in the winter.

 
Install the Blown in Blanket (BIB), also known as the Mesh Netting & Blown Fiberglass, in the wall cavity. While polyurethane spray foam is ideal, our BIB insulation system fills all crevices and areas not normally filled with standard batt insulation, thus creating a more complete barrier to heat and cold, in addition to reducing noise transfer. Improve your home's heating and cooling loss no matter how thin your budget with this practical solution.
By spraying at least a 1 inch average layer of Closed-cell spray Polyurethane foam between the wall studs and then overlaying the foam with Fiberglass, you create what is known as a flash & batt system. The idea behind the system is to fill in the gaps with cheaper material and use the more expensive spray foam sparingly for sealing and balancing out the code requirements. When these two materials are installed together, they get better results than either would on their own.
Open-Cell Polyurethane Spray Foam is a cheaper way to get the full seal you need. Upon spraying, this foam will expand up to 150 times its liquid volume, filling every crack and crevice of your wall cavity. After this process is complete, the excess foam is shaved off the studs, leaving a flat surface over which dry wall or other material can be applied. Providing a more efficient process than the Flash and Batt insulation system, this method gives the full seal you require for less.
Install a 2-inch average of Closed-Cell Spray Polyurethane Foam to the wall cavity. This highly dense material will expand up to 30 times its original liquid volume inside your wall, adding an R-value of 6.3 per inch. It fills in all the nooks and crannies like Open-Cell foam, but also provides an air-barrier, vapor barrier, and enhanced structural integrity. Closed-Cell Polyurethane Spray Foam is the most expensive insulation option, but presents the homeowner with the best insulation performance available.
