Polyurethane Spray Foam

What is Spray Foam Insulation?

Virginia Foam Insulators uses Polyurethane Spray Foam products produced by Lapolla Industries. This injected foam insulating plastic is a sticky liquid that, when mixed and sprayed, expands to many times its original size. At Virginia Foam Insulators we offer both Closed-Cell and Open-Cell Polyurethane Spray Foams with which to insulate your home.

Open Cell Insulation

Like a thick foam cushion, Open-Cell Polyurethane Spray Foam can insulate not only for air, but for sound as well. Unlike the denser, Closed-Cell insulating foam, Open-Cell bubbles burst allowing air to enter into its many pockets. This cushy, pillow-like material deadens sound on impact and keeps air right where you want it. Upon spraying, Open-Cell foam expands up to 150 times its original liquid volume, filling in all the cracks and crevices of your wall cavity. After spraying, any excess foam is shaved off the studs creating a flat surface for drywall installation. Offering an R-value of 3.7+ per inch, this product requires just five inches of thickness to create a complete air barrier in your home's most porous areas.

Besides being a great insulator spray insulation for all walls of a house, Open-Cell is effective as a sound proofing material for media rooms and home recording studios. Open-Cell foam may also be direct sprayed to roof decks.

Closed Cell Insulation

Closed-Cell Polyurethane Foam is our top selling product at Virginia Foam Insulators. Closed-cell foam is a sticky plastic that expands up to 30 times its liquid volume when sprayed, allowing it to produce an R-value per inch of 6.4+. Because of its high R-value - the unit of measurement for foam resistance and heat flow - closed-cell spray foam insulation is the best insulating product on the market today. As the plastic is sprayed, cells or bubbles in the foam are compacted together and filled with an inert gas, making the foam as dense and insulating as possible. You can see an example of this type of foam insulation keeping the air cold in your home refrigerator or freezer.

Along with its high R-value, closed-cell spray foam insulation is incredibly strong, durable and resistant to the leakage of air or water vapor. Its high density and durability make closed-cell spray foam ideal for windy, damp and water-prone locations. Customers living in coastal regions or areas of high wind or cold should consider this the product of choice. This is also the ideal insulation for crawlspaces and other damp locations. While more expensive than open-cell spray foam, at the right thickness and with proper insulation, closed-cell foam will act as an air and vapor barrier and improve the structural integrity of your home.

Fiberglass - Blown-in, Batts and Rolls

Along with our foam and foam insulation products, Virginia Foam Insulators also offers the latest in Faced, Non-Faced, and blown Formaldehyde-free Fiberglass Insulation from Johns Manville and Guardian.

With various densities, widths and lengths to accommodate any space, these products can be rolled and attached to any wall cavity or new construction project. We recommend pairing Fiberglass products with our Closed-Cell Polyurethane Spray Foam, creating a more consistent air barrier and a higher R-value, meeting local code requirements and saving money in the process.

Blown in Blanket (BIB) or Mesh Net & Blown Fiberglass

While providing the best foam insulation available today, Virginia Foam also specializes in the install of the Blown in Blanket (BIB) insulation system by Guardian. Perfect for the residential and light commercial construction markets, this application system uses netting and formaldehyde-free white blowing Fiberglass and can be installed in wall, floor and ceiling cavities. With the BIB system the entire cavity can be filled with energy-saving insulation. As the insulation is blown into the cavity, it fills all crevices and areas not normally filled with standard batt insulation. Blown-in Fiberglass creates a more complete barrier to heat and cold, in addition to reducing noise transfer. With the BIB system, walls and ceilings of any slope and size can be fully insulated. The BIB insulation system is installed using a two-step process. The walls are covered with heavy-duty, spun bond netting. The cavity is then filled with the blown Fiberglass. Drywall can be installed over the insulated wall the same day.

Virginia Foam Insulators uses the latest in BIB insulation from Guardian. Guardian's Perfect Fill is GREENGUARD® certified for Children & Schools. GREENGUARD® certified products significantly reduce the existence of hazardous emissions and promote healthy home and school environments.

Dense-Packed Blown Fiberglass

Virginia Foam Insulators uses the term "Dense Packed" to refer to when we install Fiberglass at densities approaching 4.0 lbs./ft3. Depending on the installation approach used, typical Fiberglass has a density of between 1.5 lbs./ft3. and 3.0 lbs./ft3. Dense Packed Fiberglass insulation is used in the retrofit market where it is installed by removing pieces of siding or roofing from poorly insulated or older homes. Holes are strategically drilled horizontally across the structural surface of the home so that the holes are centered in each framing cavity. Insulation is then blown via a hose into the holes filling the cavity.

Virginia Foam Insulators uses the latest in Fiberglass from Guardian for our Dense Pack jobs. Guardian's product is a high quality Fiberglass insulation used in new construction or retrofit markets. Guardian is designed to be blown dry into structural cavities.
