If you’re building a house or upgrading your existing home, then you’re probably familiar with polyurethane foam insulation. Also known as spray foam, polyurethane foam is considered the best insulation product because of its easy installation, extreme durability and great resistance to the leakage of moisture, water and air. Polyurethane spray foam can be used for a wide range of applications, including attic crawl spaces, freezers and piping.
There are two main types of polyurethane foam insulation: closed cell and open cell. Read on to learn about the differences between them, so you can choose the best polyurethane foam insulation product for your project.
Closed Cell Polyurethane Spray Foam
Closed cell spray foam is denser and more widely used than open cell spray foam. Closed cell polyurethane from Virginia Foam Insulators has an R-value per inch of 6.4+. The R-Value is the system of measurement for foam resistance to heat flow. Because closed cell spray foam has a higher R-value than other insulation products, it is the most successful insulation product on the market. When it’s sprayed, it expands about 30 times its liquid volume. Its high density and extreme strength provide optimum insulation and also toughen the walls it’s applied to.
Along with its high R-value, closed cell polyurethane insulation is extremely robust and efficient at keeping out air, moisture and water. This makes closed cell foam the best insulation product for windy, damp and water-prone locations, such as coastal areas.
Open Cell Polyurethane Spray Foam
Open cell polyurethane insulation is less dense than closed cell and has an R-value of 3.7+ per inch. While its R-value is much lower than that of closed cell, open cell spray foam is still a good insulation product. When it’s sprayed, open cell spray foam can expand up to 150 times its original liquid volume, which allows it to fill all the crevices and cracks of wall cavities. It’s a cushiony, pillow-like material that keeps air exactly where you want it.
On top of being a good insulator for air, open cell polyurethane spray foam is a good insulator for sound. It reduces sound on impact, making it an effective sound proofing material. Open cell spray foam is usually cheaper than closed cell because the product has a much lower density, and thus a lower chemical cost associated with it.
